Archiv für die Kategorie: “Special Ceremony”

http://www.public-domain-image.com (public domain image)This time our monthly pipe ceremony had a very special pipe coming, the Grandmother Moon Pipe. It was also a premiere for me, as I am the Keeper of this pipe and I was very nervous. It is something else, if you do ceremony with many during a monthly ceremony, different if you sit alone with the Pipe and something else again when there are many people coming to see the Grandmother Moon Pipe and you have the privilege to be the Keeper of the Pipe that many came to see. I was afraid, but there was no reason to be, as the Pipe does its work completely on its own. I felt a pressure on me, the Keeper of the Pipe, thinking that I have to deliver an absolutely amazing ceremony and this was totally in the wrong place. My lesson was to trust and to step back, because the Pipe does its work on it´s own and I only carry the pipe to the people. We read a story, given to us by Changing Man. Once the grandmother came out, I felt immediately better, for I felt that she was touching the people, I felt her presence and the most amazing moment during the ceremony was for me when we all sat in the circle, I held the pipe in the middle of the circle and we all sang together. I felt unity in the songs, many voices, strong energy. Yes, it was a ceremony to honor the women, we were at the center of it, together with the Grandmother. But, as balance is that which is important to bring into being these days, we ended up talking about men and how it is a big issue for me that there should not only be women´s circles, but also men´s circles. Celebrate that which makes us women women, honor the gift of the grandmothers but also listen to her advice to bring balance. Many of you out there might think that “oh, men dominate everything these days” - as this might seem to be true for some areas of life, in the end it is a matter of your perception and nothing more. Feel strong as a women and you will feel equal to the men. Women and Men each carry special medicine and BOTH of which should be properly honored. Suppression of women is not the way to go just as over-emancipation is not the right way either. Balance needs to be brought to both. Grandmother, may you guide us!

So, better late than never- we’re gearing up for the next Open Pipe ceremony here in Vienna, Austria this upcoming Saturday. This time we have the honor and privelege to be joining together in a circle led by the Grandmother Moon Pipe, and we’ll be particularly focusing on honoring Women, Woman’s Medicine, and the Divine Feminine. For those keeping other Pipes, you can of course bring them, but it would be advised not to take them out of their bundles during the ceremony, due to the unique nature of the Moon Pipe’s Medicine! For any questions, don’t hesitate to ask!
Wa?Do,

Yes, it´s been almost a month again…and I try to recollect what we have experienced during our last ceremony. The last pipe ceremony was held in honor of the Thunders, as on this specific day many pipes came together around the globe for the “Welcoming of the Thunders”-Ceremony !!

Oh yes, and they came. On the day of the ceremony itself, a farmers woman at the local market told me that she needed rain so desperately, so that her plants can grow…and that the earth has been rather dried out by the winds.

And the rain…yes, it came !! For all those in Vienna and such, they all know that we had many days of rain and more rain end of march/beginning of april. So…now that the earth is soaked again, the sun can come out and do its work !
Wa! Do !

Hier eine Ankündigung für einen interessanten Vortrag !

Museum für Völkerkunde Link

Ethnohistory, Anthropology, and Indigenous Knowledge
Vortrag von Prof. Regna Darnell, University of Western Ontario
Montag, 22.

Although the inter-discipline of ethnohistory emerged in the1950’s to inject a Native American point of view into the work of the U.S. Indian Claims Commission, it has evolved into expanding the historian’s concept of history to incorporate Indigenous Knowledge as transmitted by oral tradition. The work of anthropologists with contemporary keepers of such knowledge traditions adds a dimension of interpretation to archival histories that invites a long overdue reassessment of how we can understand the past from multiple standpoints and deploy it as a guide to coexistence in multicultural and transnatitonal contexts.

Okay, I have to admit, I haven´t written on here for a while because I simply
haven´t felt like writing anything, anywhere. But I will try to make up for
it at least a little bit.

Jim´s Visit to Austria, December 2010
As we were not able to go to the Pipekeepers Gathering last year, it was great that
Jim agreed to follow our invite to fly over to see us. I loved to have Jim here with
us in December, although I must confess that what in my mind started as a need to
see and talk to Jim and just “hang out” turned into a rather busy time for him.We
scheduled his lectures, ceremonies, had to find a seminarroom and fit other
engagements of his in. In the end, I felt like Jim came and saw, did lectures and
then had to leave again. Well, he really did more than that.

Lectures and Ceremonies
I really missed almost all of them. I was so busy to take care of all the framework
that I didn´t find time to sit at his lectures. But I heared that he deeply touched
people during his presentations of his book and audio CDs, during his talks and
in the ceremonies. I have the opportunity though to now listed to his CDs and
make up for a least a tiny bit. How lucky am I.  I promised myself - next time I´ll
make arrangements so that I have more time. And be more relaxed.

The Coming of a Grandmother
One of the ceremonies I was able to attend, involved my personal pipe. The pipe
who I have been working with for years was ready for a change. I always wondered
why “my” pipe always wanted to be rather plain, simple, no fancy artwork, nothing
that would define a bit more from the outside as to who it was.
That changed when Jim came and talked with me, the spirits and pipe and in
ceremony the moon pipe for the pipe circle over here was born.
I am so honored. And I am so happy.
And so, once this had happened…how should I put this…I got the orders.
White leather, new stem, new wrap…and so the transformation of the
pipe I am carrying has begun. It´s exciting. And the difference in the “feel”
is amazing.

Awakening new pipes
Yes, there were new pipes, which we held an awakening ceremony for.
Guided by the other pipe carriers some instructions were given
to the new pipe carriers, and we hope that all the new pipes will
join us during the open ceremonies held during the 2010 year.

Much more has happened during the time he was here. I hope next time
we´ll have more time with him.

…is a wonderful thing. Not all ceremonies have to be about healing and serious matters so to speak.Changing Man was asked to do a house blessing for a new flat here in Vienna. It was really nice, a good ceremony and I felt really good and homely there. I take that as a good sign ;). The tiniest awakened pipe in this household decided to do the ceremony and that was perfect. It was the right pipe for the right cause. She brought laughter, happiness, a feeling of being at home and family into the house. There was much love already there, now, also with the help of the Spirits we prayed to, there will be even more.
Why can´t we do more house blessings?

We also brought a small present with us and we were so moved at how it was received there! Those were tears of happiness!

I wasn´t sure if I should write about it, but now as some time has passed already, I changed my mind. Why not? As this is the blog to follow the pipes here, it would only be good to hear this story aswell. So far most of our ceremonies which I have written about since we started this page have been of the “happy happy” kind - well - not that I want to say that those are not equally important to all the ceremonies, but this one was different.

Some of you might know that someone broke into our house not too long ago. Well, as much as we were hurt and angered through this, now, honestly I am even stronger than before. My motto has come to be: you might be able to break into my house, but you can´t break me. Big words. I will try to live up to my own words. So how did this come to be?
Most of the stuff taken was of high value to me, things that noone can put a price on, something that I would never have given away unless forced to do so or just to pass it on to my beloved ones. It appears now, I have been forced to give it away anyhow. So it be then.

A few days after this had happened and a lot of talks and emails with elders, friends, helpers and family later, Changing Man announced the taking place of a Spider Ceremony.
Fainsisland Spider
We needed Healing, needed to have a place to consciously give these feelings a place to go and giving them over to spider, acknowledging at the same time that this issue should be dealt with according to her will. Not what we want – no – what she knows is the best. This ceremony is different from what some have known before from previous gatherings. It takes place in complete darkness amongst other things. So far, in my life, there had only been one other occasion, where I called to Spider for help….and this might give you an idea how “special” this is. There have been a few years in between these ceremonies.

Last time, I was desperate, I was completely out of myself, I was ready to call to Spider, to give it all over to her so she can do what needs to be done. I gave myself over and she did her work. Spider´s sting didn´t hurt so to speak, but her venom did. (Don´t get me wrong here: I was NOT bitten by a real spider)
Spider medicine works differently. You might not notice an immediate change no…the changes she brings come slowly, the things she reveals appear - you are faced with the truth – just plain naked truth - which is her medicine. And in my case it hurt on a physical and non-physical level, embracing my whole being back then - holistic approach some would say in modern-day-terms.

But now, looking back over the last years which this medicine has been working in me, I am so grateful. I am so thankful to Spider. And so this time around,
I was a bit anxious about spider´s medicine. And just when I had been writing these lines here, I get another teaching. First, on Tuesday to be exact, I had written that the spider medicine didn´t hurt me this time. Oh boy !!! Was I in for a lesson on Tuesday! Tuesday evening brought me my lesson on a silver plate. When I was the least prepared for it, truth hit me right in the face. Wham!  At least now I know the full truth. But the hurt is still too fresh to say anything but that.

I carry spiders venom already in me. Maybe it won´t hit me quite as hard as the last time when she completely took me apart and put me back together (over the last years). One needs to give the ceremonies the time they need to bring these changes about. Now, well, we are living with many little spiders in our flat, they all have seemed to come and they found themselves a cosy spot there with us…and for us it is good to know that spider has indeed come - we are not alone.

Many people came for the ceremony…just as many as our little flat can handle :D. Thanks to all who have been there. Thank you for taking part, supporting us from the circle. Thank you for smoking the Pipe with us.
Spider might have brought something for you aswell with this ceremony. She might have seen a need in you aswell and she will adress it. Taking part in this ceremony wasn´t just for us - yes, we did have a particular issue to adress (the break-in/robbery) with Spider, but she is free to see and take on anything
that others who were present in this circle had. So it was also exciting to me, so see some people coming who are not usually able to make it to the monthly pipe ceremony but did make it to this one – different as it was.

And here I also want to say thank you to the ones who gave the prayer ties of this evening a place to do their work in nature.

And yes, as expected, it turned out to be a Pipe Ceremony in honor to the Thunder Spirits. The coming together for the Pipe was slow, everything seemed to take really long (in my view)..but it was probably only the careful preparation of the smudge for the pipe and the people and then the preparation of the Kinick Kinick (Smoking mixture containing Herbs such as sweetgrass/sage/others… usually with a little bit of Tobacco, but not necessarily). A lot was being explained during this time, questions asked and answered. Amongst them was how to properly hold and wave the feather fan to get/keep the smudge going …”It´s all in the wrist, man !” :) ).

Changing Man

At first it seemed only Seahawk would be doing the ceremony, but then a second pipe, who also came, decided to join in. Wa?do! The Ceremonial pipe was loaded, the seven directions most humbly approached and invited to this place of council. Just as Changing Man was asking the Spirits to come - guess what - a mobile phone went off (oops…forgot to turn it off). The ringtone was a happy, light and joyful tune and it gave us all a chuckle….Yes, they were coming and dancing in the ceremony. When it was time to bring Seahawk to all the people attending, Changing Man handed Seahawk over to me to walk the circle with him. Seahawk needed relighting during this, but I couldn´t do it by myself…yes there is a point to this - a Ceremonial Pipe is quite large for a reason -  so that it takes two persons to light it. After everyone had the chance to smoke Seahawk, I sat by the altar and continued smoking because Changing Man was still singing a song and playing the native american flute.
During this time I did another round to the directions, this time it felt so much different. I can´t really explain it, but I smoked Seahawk, facing the directions, drew smoke and it was alive - pictures where forming, shapes seemed to be riding the smoke and I had a special feeling - I think I was just deep in ceremony. And there was still more tobacco to be smoked in Seahawk during which a friend rattled and we sang a Song to the Thunder Spirits, which Changing Man had written some 8 years back. And we also sang the Cherokee Morning Song. While noone knew the Thunder song, amazingly many of us were able to sing along and later I was even told that it seemed like many more voices were singing than people were in the room. It seemed the Spirits were singing along aswell. The Cherokee Morning Song is of course really popular, so many were able to sing along with the full strength of their voices and it was a perfect way to end the ceremony this time.

Enjoy the Cherokee Morning Song - here interpreted by Walela

As always, Wa?do!
